The Fun of Farm Life

We have this one chicken that’s been in the “hospital” tractor for several weeks now due to an unfortunate run in with a fox in the middle of the night.  (The fox actually got into the tractor because of a low spot in the ground.  Chickens are soo dumb after dark…)  The poor thing lost her comb but that was it, luckily.  Well, we were given 3 stray chicks that were too young to go into the pen with our other “teenage” chickens so we put them with her hoping, since she was out numbered, she wouldn’t pick on them too badly.  Well, she didn’t stop with just putting up, she actually adopted them and they’ve become a most unusual family – 4 different breeds all running around together!  Talk about a mother hen; she can say and do the rudest things if she thinks you’re not handling her babes just right.   I’ve never seen anything like it.

The other evening, late, Momma, Lynn and I went out to lock up the tractors and she was on top with 2 of the chicks who’d just learned to fly.  This is what we found:

I’ve seen chicks under the hen, that’s normal, but never have I seen the reverse!

Here’s an email I received from a piano student.  (I wish y’all could know this child!   He’s a treasure! )

Dear Miss Anna,

Just a few minutes ago a pig jumped over the
fence!  I went to feed them and when I looked a pig just zoomed thru the
air.  It di not tpuch the fence or anything!  It was so so so so so so so so
cool.

Now, there’s no topping that, is there…
